Some people leave behind possessions. Others leave behind stories, traditions, laughter, and a love so deeply rooted that it continues to grow long after they are gone.
Bill Weiler was one of those people.
For 53½ years, Bill was the loving and devoted husband of Debbie (née Bruce). Together, they built a beautiful life filled with family, friendship, hard work, countless memories, and a love that stood firmly through every season.
Bill was a wonderful father and an exceptional role model to his son, Jason (Lisa), and his daughter, Jennifer Sgrignoli (Walter). He was enormously proud of his children and everything they accomplished. In truth, there may never have been words big enough to describe the pride he felt for them. Their successes were his celebrations, their challenges were his concerns, and their happiness meant everything to him.
But of all the titles Bill carried throughout his life, none meant more to him than Poppa.
He was the proud and adoring Poppa of his three beautiful granddaughters, Anna Weiler (Josh), Allie Weiler (Daniel), and Charli Sgrignoli (Giovanni), and his handsome grandson, Jackson. Those four grandchildren were the light of his life.
They did not simply occupy a place in his heart—they filled it.
Bill attended every sporting event, milestone, school celebration, birthday, and special occasion he possibly could. He never wanted to miss an opportunity to show up for the people he loved. Watching his grandchildren brought him incredible joy, but it also gave him something else he treasured: bragging rights.
And Bill used those bragging rights often.
Anyone who spent time with him likely heard a story about one of his grandchildren, their latest achievement, how talented they were, or how proud they made him. He did not just love his family quietly. He loved them loudly, proudly, and without reservation.
Bill was born to the late Bertha and Wilbur Weiler. He is survived by his siblings, Anne Koebel (Wayne), Joan Fischer (Graham), Marian, Judith Chandler (John), Peter (the late Gail), Susan McKillop (Brett), Margaret, Stephen (Lori), and Kevin Fleming (Linda). He was predeceased by his loving brother, Paul (Bonnie).
He was also the loving son-in-law of the late Gordon and Lorraine Bruce and is survived by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Veryl Potvin (Ron), Allan Antoine (the late Carol), Myles Bruce, and Glenn Bruce (Raija).
Bill was a much-loved uncle to many nieces and nephews and was blessed with a large extended family of cousins whom he held close to his heart.
Family, however, was never limited to blood in Bill’s world.
Throughout the years, his home was often filled with the friends of his children, including Tarra Simpson, Monica Dorion (Denis), Kristan Straub (Jenn), Davey Mattiazzi (Nikki), and Chris Storie (Joanie). Bill welcomed them, cared for them, and loved them as though they were his own. Once you became part of Bill’s life, you became part of his family.
Bill enjoyed a long and interesting career with INCO, now known as Vale. After retiring, he continued working for several years with Wesdome in Wawa. He was hardworking, capable, and exceptionally intelligent. He had the kind of knowledge that came not only from experience but from a genuine curiosity about the world around him; this gift he passed on to Jackson.
Outside of work, Bill found happiness in the simple things that often become life’s greatest treasures.
He loved gardening and took tremendous pride in his flowers and corn. He was always willing to share his knowledge, advice, and gardening wisdom with anyone who asked. He enjoyed hunting, loved fishing, and treasured the peaceful time spent at “Camp Weiler” on Murray Lake.
Bill was intelligent, witty, loving, and unforgettable. He could make people laugh, make them feel welcome, and make ordinary moments feel special simply by being present.
Christmas held a particularly magical place in Bill’s heart. Every year, as the season approached, he seemed to transform from an adult into an excited child. His joy was infectious. His enthusiasm filled the house, lifted the spirits of everyone around him, and created memories his family will carry forever.
Bill is now reunited with his dear friends Roger Robichaud, Andy Pakkala, and Brian Nadjiwon. There is comfort in imagining them together again—sharing stories, laughing, and picking up exactly where they left off.
The true measure of a life is not found in the number of years lived, the jobs held, or the possessions collected. It is found in the people who were loved, the lives that were changed, the memories that were created, and the emptiness left behind when someone irreplaceable is gone.
By that measure, Bill lived an extraordinary life.
He was a husband, father, Poppa, brother, uncle, friend, mentor, gardener, storyteller, fisherman, hunter, Christmas enthusiast, and the proudest supporter his family could ever have asked for.
A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced once arrangements have been finalized.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that those wishing to honour Bill’s memory consider making a donation directly to the Sudbury Lions Christmas Telethon https://ctvlionstelethon.ca/sitema65efgd/donate.html or Camp Quality https://www.campquality.org/ways-to-give causes that reflect the joy, generosity, and love of children that were so important to him.
This is not goodbye.
It is simply:
“We’ll see you later.”

My deepest condolences to the family and friends.
