It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the peaceful passing of Garry Roy on Sunday, September 6, 2026 with family by his side at the Maison McCulloch Hospice in Sudbury, Ontario.
Garry was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Ruth in November of 2025.
With respect to his family of origin, Garry was also predeceased by his parents, Arthur Roy and Rose (Frozina) Drobot, and his brothers Alfred, Gene and George sister Grace. He is survived by his sisters Lynn, Angie and Blanch and Gale including many nieces and nephews.
Garry was the cherished father of Tammy Roy (Rob), loving grandfather (Poppa) to Jordyn Banks and great-grandfather (Poppa Garry) to his special little pride and joy Willow.
He was the stepparent to Leanne MacLean, Don MacLean (Sally), Debbie Balen, and Scott MacLean (Trisha). Poppa to 18 wonderful grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Garry’s early years were lived in the Donovan area of Sudbury. As a young teen he relocated to a farm in Saskatchewan where he developed a tremendous skill set in the farming and construction fields. Garry certainly had a gift with his hands and could probably build a home from scratch if asked.
He then continued to grow his talent pool by working on the pipelines. Garry learned to operate heavy equipment including backhoes and large trucks.
This prepared Garry well for his final career move. He returned to Sudbury where he carved out a long and fulfilling career with the City/Regional Government of Sudbury in the Public Works Department. He retired in a management capacity.
Outside of his primary joy of family, Garry truly enjoyed activities in the great old outdoors. His interests were many.
Garry loved horticulture. Developing landscape designs and gardens was a great source of relaxation, passion and pride.
He also loved to hunt and sport fish. Garry had a close bond with his older brother Al, who owned a camp in Westree. Together they would often venture out and enjoy these activities. They had many fishing and hunting tales.
Garry also leaves behind wonderful friends and neighbours: Long time best friends Richard and Brenda Boisvert, Bill and Kathy Gardner, Tony and Veronica Barrett and Chad and Sarah Bates, Roger Joanisse amongst others who have been incredibly thoughtful caring neighbours. Also, a huge thank you to Diane Arbour for her unbelievable compassion and care for "Pops"
It seems like only yesterday that we said goodbye to our mother and Garry’s long-term love for Ruth. We held a Celebration of life for our mom in July of 2026. Garry’s health took a sad turn not long after this family gathering. Looking back, this proved to be an opportunity for many loved ones to connect with Garry in a meaningful way.
We like to think that Garry has now reconnected with Ruth and are now venturing out for the next part of their journey. Part of this journey for Garry may also include casting a line in the water with his brother Al.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff at Maison McCulloch Hospice Respite Residential Program for their compassionate and kind care for Garry.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Garry’s memory can be made directly to Maison McCulloch Hospice.
A private family service will be held at a later time.
