McKenzie, Derek

It is with profound sadness that the McKenzie family announces the passing of Derek McKenzie.

Derek embraced life with enthusiasm, humour, and a spirit of adventure. He found joy in the simple moments—sharing stories with friends, spending time outdoors, and gathering with family. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his children. He looked forward to teaching his son, Hayden, how to drive and sharing his love of classic rock music with his daughter Kyra. Derek took immense pride in helping Hayden and Kyra grow into remarkable young people.

A devoted husband, Derek shared a loving partnership with his wife, Andrea, for nearly three decades. Their relationship was built on mutual respect, laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they created a home filled with love and countless cherished memories.

Derek leaves behind his beloved wife, Andrea; his son, Hayden; his daughter, Kyra; his parents, Blanche and Gerry; his brothers, Jason (Cynthia) and Shawn (Nadia); and his niece, Emily. He will also be deeply missed by his extended family, including his in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends whose lives he touched through his kindness, generosity, and genuine nature.

Derek attended Sudbury Secondary School and Laurentian University, where he laid the foundation for a successful career built on hard work, determination, and an entrepreneurial spirit. As the general manager and owner of IAW Courier, he earned respect throughout the community through his dedication to customers and his genuine appreciation for employees. His friendly nature, integrity, and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Derek’s love extended beyond family and friends to the many pets who were an important part of his life, including the family cats, Dracula, Ziggy, and Shade. He will be fondly remembered for the care and affection he showed to every member of his household, both two-legged and four-legged.

Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, Derek’s legacy of love, laughter, perseverance, and devotion to family will continue to inspire all who knew him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered their love, support, kind words, and expressions of sympathy during this difficult time. Your compassion, generosity, and shared memories of Derek have provided great comfort and strength and will always be deeply appreciated. His memory will be treasured and carried forward by those whose lives he enriched.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 8, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 230 Frood Road, Sudbury.
