Denis Michael Joy was born in Ontario on May 11, 1966, and grew up in the small town of St. George’s, Newfoundland. With aching hearts, we wish to announce his passing in Sudbury, Ontario at the age of 56, on February 10, 2023. To say many people knew and loved Denis would be an understatement. He had friends and family far and wide and every single one of them has a fond memory and tale about Denis. He was just one of those people. Everyone’s friend. The life of the party. The guy who would give you the shirt off his back. The hardcore Leaf’s fan, who season after season, watched in anticipation that they might finally win another Stanley Cup! Denis worked in the mining industry throughout his life which brought him to live in places like Yellowknife, Thompson, and most recently Sudbury. No matter where he lived, he always made his yearly trips, or sometimes more often, back to his hometown in Newfoundland. His heart was always at home. Left mourning his departure are: his son Andrew Duffett Joy, who was his pride and joy and light in his life; his parents Denis and Leona Joy; his brother Sean (Joane Arseneault), his sister Jennifer (Lance Jackson), his nephews Matthew, Michael, and Patrick; his godparents Theresa Gorman and Laurie Joy who he always kept in touch with; his special friend Michelle; his aunts, uncles, cousins from the Joy and Bennett families, and his many friends. Following his wishes, cremation has taken place. Celebration of life will take place at a later date in St. George’s. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to a charity of one’s choice in memory of Denis.
It seems only fitting to leave you with song lyrics from one of Denis’ favorite bands, Journey:
Say goodbye, close your eyes
Walk away, the sun remains
I'll live on somewhere in your heart
You must believe, remember
