Hurley, Joan Mary

April 26, 1936 – April 17, 2026

It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our dearly loved mom, Joan Hurley, a woman whose life was defined by love, kindness and devotion to her family.

Born on April 26, 1936, in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton Nova Scotia. Beloved daughter of Joe and Nora Richards (predeceased). It was in Cape Breton where she met her husband of 65 years, Lawrence Hurley, who predeceased her in 2020. As a young couple, they moved to Ontario and together they built a life in Dowling rooted in family raising 7 children.

Joan was a devoted mother to Lorna (Marc) Pat, Wanda (Jim), Maureen, Joanne (Eric), Belinda, Robert/Bob  (Caroline) She was so proud and loved being a grandmother to Conrad, Alain, Christienne, Jennifer, Tammy, Jessica, Ryan, Robert, Jamie, Michael, Melissa, Erica, Joshua, Briana, Jordan and Kendra as well as many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She is lovingly remembered by her dearly loved sisters Eadie, Verna and Mickey in Cape Breton, (predeceased by siblings Joe, Shirley, Theresa all of Cape Breton) as well as many loved nieces and nephews in Cape Breton, she so enjoyed her visits with all of you when she went home. Mom loved when her nephew in Ontario, Mark visited. To all of the wonderful neighbors and friends in Dowling and area, there are too many to mention, thank you. To mom’s special friend Marg, thank you for all the laughter you brought to her life.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to mom’s homecare workers, Amanda and Connie of Canadian Shield Homecare. We are so grateful to the staff at Extendicare Countryside – Owl’s Nest where Mom spent the last year and half. Your devoted care, kindness, humor, compassion and support brought much comfort not only to mom but to her family, it will never be forgotten.

In respecting Joan’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. We take comfort in bringing mom for her final journey home to her beloved Cape Breton Island where she will be reunited with her husband, Lawrence.

In honor of her life lived by kindness and gentleness, we kindly ask, in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to CTV Lions Children’s Christmas Telethon, 699 Frood Rd. Unit 1, Sudbury, please note – Estate of Joan Hurley. Her presence was a blessing and her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved her.

Mom, you will be loved always, remembered forever and missed beyond words.
