Gibson, Donald Andrew

It is with great sadness, that the family announces the passing of Donald Andrew Gibson, age 82, who lost his battle with Parkinson’s disease on May 22, 2025. Don is predeceased by his parents Ivy (née Snider) and Andrew Gibson, his son Gordon Gibson and his brother Walter Gibson.

He is survived by his beloved wife Edna Gibson (née Sobchuk), his daughters Kathryn Heimbecker (André) and Renée Lafrance (Adrian). He will be missed by his brother Wayne Gibson (Beverly) of Whitefish, his sisters Sharon Gibson (John) of Lively and Velma Gibson of Sudbury.  He also leaves behind four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Don was born in Cobden, On. He grew up in Sudbury where he began his lifelong career with Falconbridge Mines as Maintenance Supervisor. He took much pride in building and renovating his retirement home on Manitoulin Island, where he enjoyed three decades of country living. Don was an avid fisherman, spending many hours on the “big water” focused on catching the big, bigger and biggest salmon, which he often did. He also enjoyed gardening and pruning his apple and plum trees in the summer, curling in the winter, and let’s not forget “playing slots” whatever the season. As a result of his declining health, Don sold his home in 2023 and moved to Chartwell Meadowbrook Retirement Community in Lively where he met many friendly and interesting people. Sunday dinners with family were the highlight of his week.

In keeping with Don’s wishes there will be no visitation or service. Donations in his memory can be made directly to Parkinson’s Support Group of Sudbury https://parkinsonsudbury.ca/donations/ or to a charity of choice.

Gone but never forgotten

  1. Kathy:
I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Don Gibson. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Don was one of the first people I met when I started my business, and I’ll always remember him as a kind, open, and welcoming presence. As a Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor at Falconbridge, he carried himself with warmth and professionalism that left a lasting impression on those around him.

His support and approachability made a real difference in those early days, and I’m grateful to have known him.

Wishing you and your family strength and peace during this difficult time.

    With sympathy,
