With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Donald August DeBacker, 78 years on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at Health Sciences North, Sudbury, ON after an extended illness.
Don is survived by his partner of 35 years Patricia Craine, daughters Kristi Maclean (Don) of Whitby, ON, Ashley Craine Maloney (Alan) of Sudbury, ON and son Michael (Heather) of Maple Ridge, BC. He was a proud grandfather/papa to Katelyn, Anson, Callum, Lauren, Nolan and Sydney. He will be missed by sisters Diane Robins (Don, predeceased) and Katherine Bawtinhimer (Bill) of Brandon, MB along with his many nieces and nephews.
Eldest child of the late Ed and Irena DeBacker (nee DeDobbelaere), Don was born in Souris, Manitoba on January 21, 1945. Relocating to Ontario in 1971, he began a career with the Toronto Transit Commission as an electrician, retiring in 2010 after 39 years of continuous service. He was mischievously funny, fiercely loyal and generous in his support of his loved ones passions. Don enjoyed many hobbies over the years including playing baseball, horseback riding, playing both the piano and guitar. As he got older his passions turned to woodworking producing many beautiful pieces, amateur photography, and spending countless hours in the kitchen as a passionate home chef.
With our deepest gratitude we would like to thank the PSWs who helped care for Don in his final years. Our sincere appreciation also to the compassionate professionals on 4North at Health Sciences North in Sudbury for their dedication and support to both Don and our family during his final days.
At Don's request there will be no visitation or funeral. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory to the Health Sciences North Foundation hsnfoundation.com are greatly appreciated.
