Crossan, Mary Elizabeth

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Mary Elizabeth Crossan (nee O’Neill) passed away peacefully on the early morning of May 22, 2023, surrounded by her family at Pioneer Manor, Sudbury, Ontario. Mom’s home in Canada was always Shappert Street in Sudbury overlooking Ramsey Lake, where she resided until a fall and hip fracture, close to two years ago.

Mary was born and reared by the sea on the Old Bog Road, Leagard South Spanish Point, Co. Clare. She attended school at the Spanish Point convent with the Sisters of Mercy and left Ireland at the age of 18 to start her training and nursing career in Wimbledon in the south of London, England. Mom travelled to Canada exactly 63 years ago by ship “The Empress of Britain”, with the fare paid courtesy by the Government of Canada, to begin her new life.

Daughter of Martin and Josephine O’Neill, and sister to Michael and Martin (all predeceased).

She leaves behind her loving husband Patrick Crossan of 62 years. Cherished mother of Sean (Rachel Finsten), Cathy (Gilles Gervais), Eileen (Sandro Bortot), Frances (Dean Blanchard) and Sheena (Dave Burns). Nana to: Ryan, Jac, Keira, Irelande, Jimmy, Liam, and Great Nana to Dominic.

Until the very end, Mary recognized all her family, even with their masks on. She was a true Lady, kind and quiet with a wonderful sense of wit and always put everyone else first. Her Irish sayings will continue to be handed down through the generations. Today Mom’s life on earth has passed and in Heaven she starts anew.

Mary was a long-time parishioner of Holy Redeemer Church on Bancroft Drive in Sudbury Ontario, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 29, 2023 at 10:00am, followed by a reception in the Church Hall.

Mom lived with vascular dementia and donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.
