Sundholm, Carl

1928-2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Carl William (Bill) Sundholm on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at Finlandia at the age of 91. Born in Toronto on October 12, 1928 to Carl Severin and Elina (nee Laaksonen) Sundholm and was welcomed by his Sister Aino Koski (Lauri) all of whom predeceased him. The family moved to the Sudbury area in 1945, where he met Helen Kallio and they married on November 26, 1949. Cherished father of Cynthia, Evalin, Carl Anthony (Tony) and Paul Bruce (Bruce). Bill lived a good life eventually spending his early teen years living with his sister, Aino and her husband, Lauri. He was a member of the Alerts Finnish Sports Association in his younger years. He had a variety of jobs but the most prevalent was working for the Parking Authority of Sudbury, where he put his watch repair skills to good use maintaining the City’s parking meters. He went on to manage the City Center Car Park, then went on to work at Burke’s Plumbing and Heating.  His final job was with Nordic Energy which took him into retirement. Highly active within the community; he was the last surviving charter member of the Whitefish Lions Club.  He served many positions within the Club, he was also a member of the Finnish Seniors Club in Sudbury, holding a number of positions, his main one being a Bingo Caller….”Under the “O” Highway 69!! Under the “I” Highway 17!!” were his landmark calls. A dedicated member of the Whitefish Legion then joining the Lockerby Legion, which later became his second home, especially after his wife, Helen passed away in 2008. Her death took a part of him away…he loved her so much…6 months shy of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. His last apartment was so small he used the Legion as his “Living Room”. He also spent many great times at the family camp on Little Penage Lake, eventually passing on the property to his children. The sauna he built with his late Father in Law Anton Kallio still stands today and is currently being loved by all the generations. Bill is survived by his Daughters, Cynthia (Cindi) Burton whose husband Ford passed away in 2017, Evalin (Eve) Garber and her husband Tom, and sons, Tony and Bruce Sundholm. He was the proud Grandpa of Laura, Curtis, Helena (Curtis Ransom), Luke (Whitney) Burton and Grant (Chantale) Garber and Evan (Staci Moors) Garber. But even more so, the very proud Great Grandpa of Grant’s children Jayden, Mackennah, Olivia, Noah and Mila Garber: Evan’s daughter, Phoenix Lynn Garber and Helena’s Daughter, Hannah Ransom. He will equally be missed by his Nieces, Nephews, and his Finland Cousins;  best friends of many years, Reino and Sherry Maki and by Miriam Hankonen the widow of Andy who was an unofficially adopted Brother of Dad’s who is predeceased in 2020, and by all his Lion’s and Legion friends. We would like to thank the staff at Finlandia Haapa for the excellent care and compassion provided to Bill over the past 6 years, especially during his final days. Due to COVID 19, there will be a Celebration of Carl’s life held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to the Lion’s Club or the Lockerby Legion would be greatly appreciated.

  3. My thoughts and prayers go to Bruce and Bill’s (Carl) family. I always enjoyed sitting and talking to Bill, I will miss that. He was always happy and friendly. We meet people in our lives and when we take the time to get too know them we are better for it. Bill was one of those people. I first met him at my wedding at Sumorita long lake hall (not sure on the spelling) went upstairs too his apt and ask for liquor. Rack years later got to know him. lest we forget.
