Stapleton, Nina Mary

It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the passing of Nina Mary Violet Stapleton on Thursday, July 26th, 2018 at the age of 69 with her sons by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. Cherished daughter of Nina Kathryn (nee Terrell) and Philip Stapleton (both predeceased). Loving sister of David (Donna) and Joshua Stapleton. Beloved mother of Liam (wife Dana) and Colin McGill, whom she shared with Dave McGill. Nina will be sadly missed by her dear grandchildren Fiona and Niamh McGill whom she adored and always ensured were decked out in the most stylish of clothing. Nina began her career as a teacher at St. Joseph’s in North Bay before returning to Sudbury to teach at her alma mater Marymount College where she spent most of her career. It was only a matter of time before Nina discovered her true calling as she became involved in labour relations serving as union president of OECTA Secondary where she proudly represented the interests of her fellow teachers and fought to ensure them fair compensation and working conditions. For much of her life, Nina spent her summers at Lake Penage, both in childhood and adulthood with her own children. She loved spending the summers at camp where she enjoyed entertaining friends and family, swimming with her kids and driving the boat – FAST! Special thanks to Drs. Brûlé, Knight, and Noble and all the caring nursing staff on the Oncology and Surgical floors at Health Sciences North for their compassion during this difficult time. A Memorial Mass for Nina Mary will take place at Christ the King Church, 21 Ste. Anne Road, Sudbury, ON on Thursday, August 2nd, 2018 at 10:00 am. (family and friends are welcome at the Church after 9:30 a.m.). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to the Sick Kids Foundation “Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Program” (www.sickkidsfoundation.com) or the Sam Bruno P.E.T. Scan Fund at the Northern Cancer Foundation (www.ncfsudbury.com).

  1. Liam, Colin and family,
I extend my sincerest condolences. It is very difficult to say “adieu” to someone so close. Without doubt your mother was a special and dear person. I did not know her personally although we did cross paths a few times during our teaching careers but she did have two sons whom I had the opportunity to know and teach and whom I remember always. You are in my thoughts. Unfortunately I could not be present to express my symathies at Christ the King.

  3. Nina and I grew up together on Larch St in the 1950s. We followed similar life paths into teaching and labour relations. Nina was strong minded and did not hesitate to express her ideas for bettering the working conditions of her colleagues.
    My condolences to her family.

  9. To the family and friends of Nina who closely walked with her on life’s journey, thank you for the sacrifices you made regarding her time and energy, so that she could give of it to her education colleagues, and thereby make our life journeys better. I will always be grateful for Nita’s leadership in OECTA, for her collegiality, and for her collegiality to me. God bless all of you as you celebrate her life.
