Schmidt, Jakob “Jack”

In loving memory of Jakob “Jack” Schmidt, age 78, who passed away on Thursday, June 15th, 2017 due to complications from a stroke. Beloved husband of 57 years to Mary (née White). Loving father of Jack (wife Linda Bayley), Julie St Denis, Elizabeth (husband Gerald D. Brouillette) and Sara (partner Stefan Schmitz). Cherished grandfather of Steven St Denis (partner Sarah Goldrup). Dear brother of Elizabeth Krause (husband Horst Krause) and predeceased by John Schmidt (wife Cathy Schmidt). Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Jack was born in Krnjaja, Yugoslavia. Being displaced during World War II and losing his mother as a child in war-torn Europe profoundly affected the rest of his life. His family immigrated to Canada in 1951. Jack found his soulmate in his wife Mary and his happiest days were spent with his "Little White Dove”. Jack loved to read and learn and he passed this on to his children. He was immensely proud of raising four children with strong critical thinking skills, although he sometimes may have wished otherwise when he lost a rousing debate to one of them! His coworkers at INCO called him "Professor" and, in the days before smartphones were available, his knowledge was often sought when a friendly argument needed a few facts to be settled. During the last few weeks of his life there was a constant stream of staff from all floors and all departments at Extendicare York stopping in to check on Jack, to share a story, to shed a few tears, and to offer comforting hugs. The family wishes to thank the staff at Extendicare York, especially the 2nd floor staff, who treated Jack as family. They provided excellent care to him for the past seven years and made his final days as comfortable as possible. In keeping with Jack’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service at this time. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held later on this summer. If desired, a donation in his memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
