Portelance, Joel

It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of Joël Portelance at his home on Tuesday February 1st, 2022 at the age of 36.

Beloved husband of Tanya Vansantvoort (predeceased). Loving father of Cole and Kane.  Dear son of Denis and Louise (predeceased) Portelance. Special stepson of Ailen Portelance. Cherished brother of Chanelle Middaugh (née Portelance) and brother-in-law of Jeffrey Middaugh. Adored uncle to Caleb and Maève Middaugh. Dearest grandson of Rita Portelance and Roland St Germain (predeceased) as well as Sally and Gerry Savard (both predeceased). Sadly, missed by his in laws Robert and Carol Vansantvoort along with the whole Vansantvoort family. Joël also has many aunts, uncles and cousins who love him very much.

Joël will forever be remembered for his big, beautiful smile and his generous heart. He was a man who loved to quietly reflect while solving math puzzles. He also enjoyed fishing and the outdoors with his ATV. His favourite pastime was playing RC cars with his two boys.

He worked as a miner in various roles for over 14 years. Joel was known for his hardworking nature whether he was mining or helping out friends and family. When asked, he would always be there to lend a helping hand.

Joël is now at peace and has been reunited with his mom and his beautiful wife. He will be deeply missed by all. We will always cherish the good memories and times that we spent together. Although he is no longer by our sides, he is forever in our hearts.

Due to current COVID restrictions the family will host a celebration of life in the Summer of 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations made in Joel’s memory can be made directly to Maison McCulloch Hospice https://maisonsudburyhospice.org/donate/.

  4. Joel was such a larger than life person. A quiet strength in him. I went to school with his wife and was touched at how he was such a protective and dotting father. I know his last few years after Tanya’s passing he couldn’t seem to recover though never giving the idea he wasn’t 100%. I’ll miss him dearly. So sad to see this… rest in peace Joel and Tanya. May you rest and watch over the boys. I’ll pray for them. I’m so sorry for your loss.

  6. So sad to write this. I new Joel and Tanya when they were just dating. Such a nice couple and great parents. Life can be very unfair. It’s hard to see both his parents gone then his wife and now him. I hope you find peace and are reunited with your family. My best wishes and condolences to your children and family.
