With heavy hearts and happy memories, we are sad to announce the passing of Sonja Pakkala (nee Peltoniemi). Sonja passed away peacefully with family by her side at Health Sciences North on Sunday, September 6, 2020, at the age of 82. Beloved wife of William Pakkala (predeceased in 2016). Loving mother of Kenneth (Julie). She will be missed by her grand-dogs Sam and Paige. She is survived by her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and family friends. Dear daughter of Herman and Elsie (nee Myllenen) Peltoniemi both predeceased. She was the youngest of the Peltoniemi family, Worthington (predeceased); Toini (Jack Shulman), Bertha (Arnold Fransen), Harry (Jessie Sokoloski), Muriel (Harry Duck), and Dagmar (Urho Wiirta). Sonja loved curling, get togethers with the tech ladies, and traveling as they spent many winters in Arizona. Special thank you to the wonderful and dedicated staff of the 4th floor at Health Sciences North. At the family’s request, there will be no funeral visitation or service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to Petsave Sudbury.
I am so saddened to hear of Sonja’s death. She was like a mother to me when I was just starting my working life. She kept the Northern Affairs office in Espanola running smoothly and was always there to help out, cheerfully, no questions asked. She was a great lady and a great friend. I was happy that I got a chance to reconnect with Sonja several times over the past two years. I know how much she missed Bill. Now she is with him again. Rest in peace Sonja. My deepest condolences to Kenneth.
