Hornby, Vernon “Vern”

It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Vernon “Vern” Harris Hornby in his 79th year at Health Sciences North on Tuesday, June 26, 2018. Beloved husband and best friend of 52 years to Elsie Hornby (nee Matson). Born in Sudbury, he was the son of the late George and Gladys (nee Harris) Hornby. Dear brother of Neil (Alice), Helen Adams (Jim) and Geraldine Moreau (Danny) all predeceased. Brother-in-law of Frank Matson (Joanne) of Calgary, Clifford Matson (Karen) of Garson, Judy Carr (Mike) of Oshawa, Diane of Manitoulin Island and Debby (predeceased). Loving uncle to many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Vern retired from Bell Canada after 37 1/2 years of dedicated service. In his retirement years, he and Elsie spent many winters in Arizona and travelling with their NT PNK 1937 Ford. Vern prided himself with taking good care of Elsie. He would say “She took care of me for the first 40 years, now it’s my turn.” Every morning Vern went for a coffee at McDonald’s with his car buddies. He loved his monthly meetings with his car club, Cruise Night, Friday night dinners at Pat and Mario’s and watching NASCAR races. Vern was a kid magnet, whenever he was at Cruise Night, the kids would say “Where’s the Trouble Maker”, as this was their favourite name for him. Vern loved to tease them, and they loved it. He was a big guy with a soft heart. The family would like to send a special thank you to Gary, Terry and Dr. Crichton and the many wonderful friends who helped Vern during his last days. Good bye Vern, you will never be forgotten. In keeping with Vern’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. A Celebration of Vern’s Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made directly to the Sudbury Cancer Centre or ALS Canada.

  1. Our deepest sympathies to you in your loss Elsie. I’ve known Vern for 50 years. He was always the “FORD” guy, always a straight shooter and I was always proud to call him friend. A great car guy and an even better human being. Take care buddy, we will miss you !! ps He was also a heck of a stock car driver in the Hurricane park days.

  4. Glad to have had a nice visit with Vern at this year’s Chelmsford Car show. A pioneer of street rodding in Sudbury, he will be missed by many. He showed me how to drive my 427 Ford a lifetime ago.
Vern was always the “FORD rock”
Deepest sympathies to his life partner … Elsie.
