Comin, Philomena ‘Freemana’ “Free” (nee Gagliardi)

In loving memory of Philomena ‘Freemana' , “Free” Comin, who passed away on December 30, 2021 at the age of 95 in her home. Born in 1926 to Peter and Adelina (nee Grandoni) Gagliardi in Niagara Falls. Spouse of Joseph Comin (predeceased) mother of John ‘Johnny ‘Comin (predeceased), Judy Bellmore (Michael), Susan Lafond (Donald), Janet Comin and Gary Comin. Noni/Nona to Tracey (Nick), Donny, Stephanie (Paul), Jessica (Jason), Kelsey (Trevor), Miabella (Owen). Great Nona to Jordon, Madison, Dylan, Mathew, Joshua, Eva, Harlow, Darien, Hannah. Sister to Mary, Abraham ‘Abe’, Pete (predeceased), Rosino ‘Rosie’ (predeceased), Katherine ‘Kay’ (predeceased), Adam(predeceased), David(predeceased).

Our mother was an intelligent woman who was dedicated to raising a family and managing a household. She was born and raised on a farm where she would help milk the cows, feed the chickens then walk a few miles to school (at least that is what she told her children). Her expertise in cooking was unmatched a talent she passed on to ‘some’ of her children. She enjoyed cards, playing Canasta, 500 and Bridge with her friends, later in life playing with family but having to be watched carefully for her sleight of hand. Weekly trips to the Casino were an adventure and she took great joy in the smallest of wins. Philomena was an avid reader, puzzle maker, clothes maker and enjoyed watching old movies.

Free enjoyed spending warm summer days at her daughter’s camps and partaking in the mischievous antics taking place. She travelled throughout her life across Canada, parts of USA, Italy, Australia, Timmins and all the backroads of Northern Ontario with her husband at the wheel.

We would like to thank all the grandchildren and great grandchildren that did her favors, visited just to talk, brought her flowers or gifts, thank you to the hairdresser, housecleaner, manicurists, friends that played cards with her, cooked with her or just came to talk all these were life’s nourishment. Thank you to Dr. Killian de Blacam.

We” say to that undertaker, please drive slow for that lady you are carrying; we hate to see her go”

A private family celebration will take place at a later date.

  3. Hope you find some comfort in that we share in the knowing of how great a loss this is to you all. She was such a wonderful person sharing her knowledge and skills with so many. Thank you again for Aunt Free’s cookbook that gave us an authentic advantage to get those familial flavours that bring back so many shared memories. I (we) wish you peace and am glad your Mom, Nona and Great Grandmother had years with you all beyond imagination. 95! Also quite a legacy for making those long frequent trips down to Niagara to keep in personal touch. And also her wonderful children, always friendly and cheerful….hope you all find many joys in your memories of Aunt Free for years to come.
