Akerman, Loretta

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we say goodbye to the matriarch of our family. Loretta Akerman (nee Duggan) passed peacefully on Monday, September 26, 2022.

Lorretta was born on October 25, 1926 in Renfrew, Ontario to Johanna and Daniel Duggan. The youngest of nine children, she is predeceased by her siblings Margaret, Mary, Alice, James, Juliana, Rita, John and Michael.

She was the loving wife of the late Marvin Akerman and recently predeceased by her much-loved son Allan. Loretta is survived by her daughter Debbie Smyth, son-in-law Peter Smyth, and daughter-in-law Debbie Akerman (Allan). She was unbelievably proud of her grandchildren Krista (Craig), Tamra (Niels), Erin and Lauren (Andrew). She was also a loving Great Grandma “GG” to Caeden, Easton and Kellan. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews and close friends.

Loretta was an outgoing woman who loved tending to her flower gardens and spending summers at their cottage with Marvie in Great Village, Nova Scotia. Loretta was a social butterfly who had an amazing sense of humour with a youthful and feisty spirit. She enjoyed golfing, travelling, and playing cards with friends and family. In 2004 Loretta traveled to the Yukon and proudly won a gold medal in bridge at the National Senior Games. Until recently she had been an active member of the Lively Senior Centre, enjoying and helping organize activities and ensuring the tables were set beautifully. Her company was enjoyed by everyone who knew her.

As per Loretta’s wish there will be no visitation or services. Donations in lieu of flowers, may be made in Loretta’s memory to St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre.  http://www.sjsudbury.com/index.php/st-josephs-foundation/ways-to-donate/

  2. Debbie, I’m so saddened to hear of your mom’s and Allan’s passing, especially so close together. My sympathies to you and the family. I’m not sure if you remember me but I am Mona and Chester Muir’s oldest daughter. They were Allan’s godparents. I have fond memories of the times are families got together either in Lively or in Falconbridge. You are in my thoughts.
