In Loving Memory of Richard (Rick) Briggs, 72 years who passed away with his son by his side on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at Health Sciences North, Sudbury. Loving father of Christopher Briggs and Tresha Briggs-Nash. Proud grandfather of 6. Dear brother of Douglas Briggs, Marion Fenton, Elizabeth Riedle, Art (predeceased) and Hillis (predeceased). Born in Sussex, NB he was the son of the late Arthur and Dorothy (Parlee) Briggs. Sadly, missed by many nieces and nephews as well as by his “Brothers and Sisters” of Local 598. His life story reads of an eager young man who began his career as a Miner with Falconbridge and worked his way up to be the Long-time President of Mine Mill Union Local 598. A position he held dearly and took great pride in. This journey began as a Union organizer and representative and ended years later with a tremendous legacy of someone who worked tirelessly as a Union Leader, Tradesman, and an activist who fought for his workers and their rights. Upon his retirement from Falconbridge, Rick went on to work with the Ontario Government at The Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and will be remembered as a respected and dedicated Union President. In lieu of flowers, donations in Rick’s memory can be made directly to The Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Rick’s Life will be held back home in New Brunswick where his cremains will be laid to rest.
Rick was a caring individual and always fair. He will be missed by myself and many others.
My sympathies to his family.

I knew Rick briefly through our work at the WSIAT. I am very saddened to hear of his loss. I knew him to be a kind, generous and humorous man. I will miss him. RIP.

Rick was my friend and colleague as a member of WSIAT I found him to be compassionate caring and concerned for the workers who appeared before the panel but he was always fair in his decision to both worker and the employee, I enjoyed going to Sudbury as Rick would always take me on a tour of his city pointing out the important and historical places ad area. He always concluded his tour and there were many in our 9 year history at the building his local union built with no government funding. Rick had a wonderful sense of humor and was a great story teller with his escapades as a miner, trapper and a prospector in Canadian north. I will miss him. May God bless you Rick Reverend Bill Davis

Sincere condolences to Chris, Terry and family. I have fond memories of the “Briggs” and growing up in Hanmer, ON. Rick was always a good neighbour and supportive to mum and dad and they were grateful for his support and guidance following dad’s mining injury. May you be comforted by the knowledge that others like me share in your grief. He will be sadly missed.

I am sorry to hear of Rick’s passing but glad to know he was not alone at the end. For me Rick and Mine Mill brought the union movement to life with a noble history and enduring strength. I am grateful for the time we enjoyed together as friends and as trade union brothers in a common cause.

Rick had a big heart and he was a very generous man. He was always ready to help others. When others helped him he would never forget it. He loved to laugh and to make others laugh. All in all he was a really fine person. I will miss him.
My sympathies to his family and friends.
