McLean, Shirley Germaine (nee Manhire)

May 30, 1933 - February 19, 2026

It is with a filled, yet very heavy heart we announce Shirley’s peaceful passing in hospital.

Born in Timmins, Ontario to Barney and Gerty Manhire, Shirley was an only child. She would grow up there surrounded by family and would later work alongside her parents at their 2 flower shops in Timmins. Shirley would eventually move to Elliot Lake to work at Dennison Mine, there she would meet Jack McLean (predeceased). Let the games begin. Curling weekends with friends and family, trips to Wawa and Timmins and as I am told many, many parties.

Jack and Shirley would marry in Apil of 1961.The gas company would take them to North Bay and eventually Sudbury, where they started a family and bought a cottage on Ministic Lake. They would own this piece of paradise for over 50 years. The cottage would become a second home for Shirley and her family. It would be a place that brought so many people together over the years, and many celebrations. If the walls of that old log cabin could talk!

For those who knew Shirley they will remember her love for music, passed down by her dad, she was very passionate and it became one of her favourite pastimes. You would be hard done by if you visited and music was not playing in the background. She supported Radio Shack as if she owned shares in the company.

Shirley was not your normal stay at home Mom. She was always up to something. Curling, bowling, golfing, skiing lessons and photography classes, and most importantly shopping!!  Shirely would also coach Ringette for a few winters, best Coach ever!! Some of you may even have a one-of-a-kind curated piece of fancy driftwood.

In her retirement years, travelling would become her passion. Alaska, Hawaii, France, Italy, and Graceland are just some of the amazing places that she and her dear friend Sheila travelled to.

Daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law, cousin, niece, Aunt, and a true friend to so many. We will all remember her as being kind, friendly, a good listener, and yes, sometimes silly. Your memories with her will survive the test of time.

Shirley is survived by many friends and loved ones, too many of course to name. Patrick, Stacey (Andy), Kelsey (Roger), Kenai, Paige, Jack, Katie, Jennifer, Joyce, and dear friend Sheila. Mickey and Miali Koski, whom she though of as her own children.

There is no way to describe a life in a few pages, especially one that was so fulfilling. Shirley enjoyed her life, her family, and her friends. I will miss that quirky little smile.

The day must come for everyone to report “Off Duty”; while it may not seem fair that she is gone, we all know how much she loved us and she has left her mark. I hope each one of you reading this will take a minute to remember some amazing memory you had with her and raise a glass. She really was one in a million.

Shirley, you found a place in our hearts, and in that place you shall remain.
