McLaughlin, Larry Gilmore

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Gilmore McLaughlin on Friday, May 16th, 2025 at Health Sciences North, Sudbury, at age 87.

Born on December 11th, 1937 in Creighton Mine, Ontario, to Leo and Anne (née Bernier) McLaughlin. Larry was a loving husband, father of three, grandfather of four and great-grandfather of six. He worked hard for more than six decades and enriched many people’s lives through his kindness, humour and generosity.

He is survived by his beloved wife Helen Mary McLaughlin (née Fajcz), whose devotion was a blessing to him through 67 years of marriage and nearly 70 years as a couple. Larry was a selfless father and provider to his son Larry, Jr., of Kukagami Lake; his daughter Lorie (predeceased), and his son Gord, of Toronto. He is greatly missed by Larry Jr.'s sons Brent McLaughlin, of Hanmer (with Charlotte Hughes, and their children Anessa and Charlie) and Brad McLaughlin, of Val Caron (with son Kalen) and by Lorie’s son and daughter Michael Lappan, of Virginia (with Elle Bunn, and their children Madeline, Nash and Gillian) and Krista Lappan, of Chelmsford.
Larry worked for decades at INCO, then took what he learned there and developed a teaching career at Cambrian College. He was dedicated to ensuring his students learned how to work properly and safely. In some cases, he helped boys to become responsible men, and some have called him the best teacher they ever had.

For the 10 years that he and his family lived in Levack, Larry was heavily involved in St. John Ambulance First Aid training and he served as a Fire Captain for the Onaping Falls Volunteer Fire Department.

Larry was proud of his roots in Creighton, where the McLaughlin kids grew up playing a lot of sports. People from Levack will remember him for joining neighbourhood kids in games of road hockey, and he loved talking baseball with his brothers. His spirit will live on in all of the good that he accomplished.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
