MARY CHRISTINA MOROSO

December 20th,1931- October 25th, 2026

MARY CHRISTINA “CHRIS” (nee MACDONALD) passed away peacefully to the sounds of Celtic music at the age of 94, in Sudbury, ON, October 25th, 2026, at Pioneer Manor.

Loving mother of Darren (Sandra), Gerry (Denise) and adored Nana to Lauren, Michael (Kaytie), Candace and Alanna. Survived by sister Theresa Avery, brother-in-law Frank Moroso (Michelle) and sister-in-law Mary Ferreira (Joe). Predeceased by her siblings Sarah, Flora, Kay, Donald, Archie, Hughie and brother Angus in infancy. Also predeceased by Dino Moroso, father of her 2 sons, sister in-law and brother-in law Irene and Roldo Canapini, and her long-time companion Tony Monaghan. Forever will be missed by her extended family, generations of nieces and nephews, along with her close circle of friends who she cherished, as you all made her life richer, especially in her advanced senior years.

Born in Judique, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to the late John A. and Jessie (O’Handley) MacDonald, Mom came from humble roots, but her determination and sense of adventure led her to Teacher’s College in Truro, Nova Scotia. She taught first in her home province, then in Toronto, as far north as Wawa, but eventually settling in Sudbury. She had a rewarding 35-year teaching career where 28 of those years were with the Sudbury Separate School Board. After her retirement, she took great pleasure in running into former students over the years when she was out and about and they all seemed to have fond memories of being in her classroom. They would all tell her she was a firm but fair teacher. While she would frown at us sharing this story, her trademark “ear pull” if you got out of line in her class was legendary J We, as her sons, did not escape this, also having her for a teacher!

In her mid 40’s, she enrolled at Laurentian University and achieved her bachelor’s degree through night classes over the course of 3 years. No easy task while teaching all day, raising two young sons but she persevered to graduate as that was our Mom. Her fierce determination allowed her to achieve any goal she had in mind.

Mom was a life-long parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church and Catholic Women’s League member.  She spent many years volunteering at events, and took pleasure in assisting with many Church Teas, all while enjoying the social interactions.

Always proud of her Cape Breton heritage, she was also a key member and organizer of the Cape Breton Club in Sudbury where she held various roles and was the ultimate organizer of dinners and dances which provided her with many friendships that lasted throughout her lifetime.

When she met her long-time companion Tony Monaghan in the mid 70’s, he introduced her to the Irish Heritage Club and between the 2 clubs, her social calendar exploded. There were regular potluck dinners, card and golf tournaments as well as fundraisers, most notably the Bell Park Organ Donation Awareness Walk that she participated in, well into her senior years. She also made time to support the Inner-City Home of Sudbury for years making sandwiches, always thinking of those less fortunate and how she could give back. Whenever she knew that someone in her social circle was in ill health, she was always there to assist however she could, be it driving them to appointments, dropping off a home-cooked meal or even just a comforting visit.

Back in 1992, again with her fierce determination, Mom set out to purchase some property in her home province which led to the family cottage in Port Hood, Cape Breton. The cottage provided many memorable vacations for her and Tony and our families for over 3 decades and it became a gathering place for our big extended Cape Breton family and “kitchen ceilidhs” that spilled out onto the cottage deck with no shortage of traditional Celtic fiddle music. This was truly her happy place and right up until Mom was 93 years old, we were able to get her on a plane for one last cottage vacation and memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

One of her other big passions into her 90’s was the game of Scrabble. She spent many years playing with her close circle of friends. A special thanks to Mary and John Hopkins and Pat Eccelestone for their hospitality and friendship who kept those weekly games going which Mom still attended right up until June of this year until her health declined.

Mom will always be remembered for her big heart, beautiful smile, love for her family and friends, her kindness and generosity, and always putting others before herself. We are so fortunate to have had her in our lives for so many years. Her fierce determination to achieve her goals throughout her life, and enjoying her family and many friendships kept her going well into her golden years. She certainly made an impact and will be deeply missed by our family and her friends but will live on now in our hearts forever.

Special thanks to the entire staff at Pioneer Manor -Pine Place for the exceptional care, compassion and kindness you gave to our Mom throughout her stay. Our family is truly grateful for everything you did for her. Also, special thanks to the Sudbury VON Assisted Living for their earlier support and compassion. Thank you to all the numerous caregivers assisting in the last few years, and most recently Zora for your visits and brightening up her days. For all the family and friends who visited Mom or checked in, we thank-you for reaching out as your care and concern meant a lot to her and to our family.

A Funeral Mass will be held in the spring at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sudbury (date TBC in the new year) followed by a summer Catholic burial in her hometown of Judique, Cape Breton, back to her birthplace and where her well-lived life all began.

If you wish to make a donation in her name, please consider the Inner City Home of Sudbury as she was a longtime supporter of this organization.

"May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sunshine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand."  -
