Cal Wright and family announce with deep sadness the passing of his mother, Lila Maude Wright, just months shy of her 95th birthday. Lila passed away peacefully at Health Sciences North, surrounded by the love of her family.
Lila was the beloved wife of Gerald (Gerry) Wright, who predeceased her in 1996. She was the loving mother of Cal (Rita; Susan, predeceased) and James “Jimmy” (predeceased). She was the cherished grandmother of Cal’s children, Lisa Keenan (Scott), Lonny Wright (Candice), Billy Wright (Amanda), and Sara Lotter (David), as well as Jimmy's children, Shannah Wright and the late Nathan Wright. She was also the proud great-grandmother of Liam, Jaiden, Katie, Grace, Cameron, Jesse, Michael, Raina, Gunner, Emily, Matthew, and the late Devyn. Lila was predeceased by all of her siblings, Floyd, Gladys Stewart, Malcolm, and James. She is fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and Florence Hawkins, her surviving sister-in-law.
Lila was born on Christmas Eve, 1931, in Black’s Harbour, New Brunswick, to Arthur and Lena Hawkins. It was there that she met and married the love of her life, Gerry. Seeking better opportunities, they packed up their car and moved the family to Sudbury, Ontario, when Gerry was hired by INCO. A couple of years after the move, they welcomed their younger son, Jimmy.
Deeply committed to her community, Lila was incredibly proud of her involvement in Scouts Canada as a Gilwellian. She dedicated many years to the Lockerby Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and following Gerry's passing, became a passionate supporter of the Alzheimer’s Society. Her legacy of community service and family strength will be proudly carried forward by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, ensuring her memory lives on. Her entire family will deeply miss their special Christmas tradition of celebrating her birthday together.
Pioneer Manor was Lila’s home for the last 15 years, and the family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff for making her feel safe and truly at home. Special thanks are also given to the compassionate nursing staff at HSN for their care and comfort during her final days.
A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, a cause near and dear to Lila's heart.
