Paajanen, Tapio

Our hearts are heavy as we share news of the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Tapio Markus Paajanen. Tapio left us peacefully on August 1, 2026, just days before what would have been his 79th birthday. Tapio is survived by his soulmate Monique. He was a proud father to Kurt (Stacy), Ericka (David), and Ashley (Dylan). He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Victor, Jones, Lexi, and Penny, and by his brother Jouni (Debbie), his brother-in-law, Matti Salmela and sister-in-law, Leila Paajanen.

His memory lives on through the many extended family members, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives he touched. He is reunited with those who went before him: his parents, Aune and Veikko Paajanen; his brothers, Markku and Tuomo; and his sister, Tuula. Tapio was born in Kokkola, Finland and immigrated with his family in 1957, laying roots in Long Lake. For over 36 years, he served his community as a police officer with the Greater Sudbury Police Service, wearing the badge with pride. He often referred to being part of "the biggest street gang in the world". He was a respected presence in the community, helping humbly and quietly. His family will forever treasure the countless hours on Attlee Lake and aboard the Sea Dog in Killarney, Ontario, where every fish caught (or missed) became another story—some growing just a little bigger with each telling. Those stories, shared from the back of the boat, became part of the fabric of family life and will continue to be retold for generations. When he wasn’t on the boat or at camp, you might find Tapio at the hockey arena or football field cheering on his grandsons, catching up with old friends at Leinala’s bakery or at Tim Hortons. He will be remembered for his strength, his humour, his stories, his unwavering love for his family, and his deep respect for the natural world. Though he has left this life, his presence remains—in every quiet forest, every morning on the dock, every bird at the feeder, and in the ‘big hum’ that connects us all. A memorial mass will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 189 Regent St, Sudbury, Tuesday August 11, 2026 at 3pm. Followed by a Celebration of Life at the Police Association Hall at 195 Applegrove St. from 6pm to 9pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson’s Canada or to Rock Steady Boxing, Sudbury. Those wishing to honour Tapio's memory are encouraged to spend time outside: walk a forest trail, watch the birds, or cast a line. Maybe you’ll even fire up the sauna for an evening steam. It is in those places that his spirit will always be found.
