Meigs, Elizabeth “Betty”

After a long, well-fought battle with cancer we are saddened to announce the passing of Elizabeth “Betty” Cowell Meigs at the Maison McCulloch Hospice. In keeping with her love of all things horror and her macabre sense of humour, she got the last laugh by concluding her journey on Friday, the 13th of February 2026.

She is survived by her daughter Peggy (Dave), her sisters Margaret (Dave) and Bonnie (Bill), as well as nieces, nephews, and many more close cousins and friends, who will carry her memory forward with love and a dash of profanity. She is predeceased by her parents Roy and Louise (Bondett) Cowell and her brother, Kenny.

Betty was born in Sault Ste. Marie, but made her homes in both London and Sudbury Ontario. For 45 years, she carried a deep devotion to caring for others as a RPN. Her career began in London at Victoria Hospital where she worked in Labour and Delivery for more than a decade before making her way back to Sudbury to begin her work caring for the elderly. She spent the remainder of her career working in retirement homes, mainly The Walford as Director of Nursing and finally, The Walford on the Park as the Administrator before her well deserved retirement.

Beyond her work, Betty had a gift for keeping the people she loved close. She believed in the power of family and friendship and nurtured those connections with the same care she brought to her profession. Whether through small gestures or gathering loved ones together for her famous butter tarts and Bailey’s cheesecake, she created a sense of belonging that will be deeply missed. Those who knew her will remember her not only for the care she gave, but for the warmth she shared.

Thank you to Dr. Singh, Dr. Pitre, and Dr. Carlson and the staff at the Northeast Cancer Centre for the care she received during her treatments over the last five years. We would also like to acknowledge the staff and volunteers at the Maison McCulloch Hospice for not only the compassionate care they provided Betty, but also the care they provided us as her family. You are angels on earth and from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. In keeping with Betty’s wishes, instead of a formal service we will host one heck of a party at a later date in her honour. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Maison McCulloch Hospice (https://maisonsudburyhospice.org/donate/).

  2. So sorry for your loss. Kenny and I were as brothers. Betty was a sister to me. She will be missed. Her sense of humour was so awesome. Like the time her and Bonnie stole my walking cane out of the cart at the dollar store and watched as they hid while I looked all over for it.
She was and will always be truly loved.
