It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce the sudden passing of Seija Alma Helena Hanninen on February 9, 2026 at age 77. Born in Kivijarvi, Finland (October 4, 1948) and emigrated to Canada when she was young, settling in Sudbury and later Lively. Daughter of Vaino and Selma (nee Pohjolainen) Hanninen, sister to Seppo Hanninen (predeceased), Sirpa Doull (predeceased), Pekka Hanninen (Wendy), Sinikka Cloutier (Gerry), and Stella Grenon (Gord). Mother to sons Patrick Binmore, Eric Binmore, David Hanninen (Veronika), and Mark Hanninen (Laura). Mummi to Kai, Andrew, Kalei, Daniel, Audrey, and August. Seija was known for her dedication to work (38 years retired CIL/INCO/Vale), her sons, and extended family including her dear friend Susan Savignac. She also had a deep love for her pets (indoor and outdoor) and her house plants. Seija was a prolific craftswoman creating countless pieces of beautiful artwork in many forms including numerous cross-stitches. She had great skill with Finnish baking, feeding everyone with Pulla, Cinnamon Buns, Keralian Piirakkas, and especially Joulutorttus made at the annual Christmas cookie party. Her kind and humble nature will be missed by her family, friends, and neighbours. A celebration of life to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Sudbury Food Bank.

My deepest condolences to all of the family on your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very difficult time.
