Makela, Gabrielle “Cupey” Eleanor

February 12, 1938-October 20, 2025 (87)

It is with profound sadness the family of Gabrielle “Cupey” Makela (nee Dyce) announces her peaceful passing at Health Sciences North after a brief illness. Beloved wife of the late Everett Carl Makela (predeceased 2022), loving mother of Everett Jr. (predeceased 2019, Barbara) and Mark (Roxanne). Cherished Nanna of Benjamin, Jane (Gunay), Lara, Elizabeth, and Great-Nanna of Sidar. Predeceased by her parents Percy and Gabrielle Dyce, Gabrielle leaves behind her dear sister Hazel Wiebe (Neil, predeceased), her extended family, many dear friends, and the last of her canine companions, Watson. Born and raised with a strong sense of family, Gabrielle married Everett in 1959 and together they built a loving home at the Makela Farm on Grassy Lake. Known for her open heart and welcoming kitchen, Cupey’s warmth, kindness, and fantastic food touched everyone she met. She supported her husband in the family business, Akela Aircraft Repair, worked for many years as a librarian at the Walden Public Library, and volunteered with the Sudbury Regional Police.

A celebration of Gabrielle’s life will be held at a later date at the Penage Road Community Centre. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations directly to a charity of your choice in her memory.

Forever loved and deeply missed. Till we meet again.

  4. So very sad to hear of Cupie’s passing. Some of my favourite memories of Cupie was her laughter, how she always made me feel welcome and of course, her delicious cooking. My love and warmest condolences to Mark and the entire family.

  5. Our condolences to all of Cupey’s family and friends. She was the kindest and caring of people and will certainly be missed. We both recall her dedication to volunteering at the Walden Storefront office of the then Sudbury Regional Police. Always a smile and positive conversation for the citizens and officers that worked from that location and her deliciously famous butter tarts!

  6. Cupey was a wonderful lady who I have known practically my whole life. She loved her family, her pets, her friends whole heartedly. She was a great friend and coworker to my mom and I have many warm memories of seeing her at the library and her home. She always made a special candy apple at Halloween when I was young. Sincerest condolences to all her family.

  7. Cupie was an amazing person in so many ways. She once took me in as lost duckling at the library and let me help out knowing I wanted to be around her and her books, even before volunteering was a regular thing. She was an amazing mom and cook. She generously shared her food and expertise and taught me how to make rice boats and pedahe (perogies). She always had a kind word for everyone and accepted people the way they were. I will miss her dearly and her vibrancy will live on in my heart and memories.
